Rain didn't stop play!

Capturing Adele and Robert’s wedding at Islington Town Hall was a true testament to the unpredictability of British weather and the resilience of love. Despite the rain, which persisted throughout the day, we were able to create some truly memorable moments. Rainy days may present challenges, but they certainly don’t mean the photos are a washout. In fact, with the right approach, rain can add a unique charm to the images.

Starting the day at Adele and Robert’s home, I photographed the preparations, which, although tight on time, were an enjoyable part of the coverage. The intimacy of those moments before the ceremony always tells a beautiful part of the story. We managed to capture a series of candid and heartfelt images in just a couple of hours, proving that even under time pressure, there’s always room to create lasting memories.

Those tricky group shots

The ceremony at Islington Town Hall was lovely, but the real challenge came when it was time for the group shots. As any London documentary wedding photographer knows, the steps of Islington Town Hall can be quite a busy spot, especially when juggling tight schedules and unpredictable weather. The rain meant that timing was crucial; we had only a few minutes on the steps before the next wedding party needed their turn. Managing the crowds while trying to keep everyone dry was tricky, especially since nobody wants to get wet on their wedding day. However, with a bit of quick thinking and coordination, we managed to get everyone into position and captured some lovely group shots.

Invest in the right umbrella

A common challenge on rainy days is, of course, umbrellas. Everyone wants to stay dry, but not all umbrellas are created equal when it comes to photography. The clear plastic ones are ideal, as they not only look elegant but also let light through, ensuring that faces aren’t cast in unnatural colours. A red umbrella, for example, could create a distracting red hue across someone’s face, which is difficult to correct. Thankfully, Adele and Robert’s guests mostly had the right idea, and we were able to get some lovely shots without too much interference from colourful umbrellas.

Embracing the moments

In the end, Adele and Robert’s wedding was a perfect example of how documentary wedding photography can thrive even in less-than-perfect conditions. The rain may have changed some plans, but it also added an element of spontaneity and authenticity to the day. As a London-based documentary wedding photographer, I’m always ready to embrace these moments, turning what could be seen as setbacks into opportunities to capture something truly special. If you’re planning a wedding at Islington Town Hall and are looking for a photographer who can handle whatever the day brings, rain or shine, I’d love to hear from you.
